| IMRA 2008 Statistics |
The the North West Mountain Rescue Team (NWMRT) is part of the Irish Mountain Rescue Association (IMRA). IMRA is the central reporting body for all 12 Irish & Northern Irish Mountain Rescue teams, and their collected 2008 statistics send a powerful message to all hill users.
As the summer of 2008 was the busiest season for the teams, and in many cases, proper planning and preparation would have saved a callout to the Mountain Rescue Team, the NWMRT asks that all hill users support their local Mountain Rescue Team by following these simple guidelines: 1. Pay attention to the weather forecast and choose routes that are appropriate to the conditions and the competence of you and your party. 2. Be well equipped with both warm clothing, food, hot drinks and the right equipment. 3. Don’t assume that you will have mobile phone coverage; it is no substitute for ability and preparation and is not a shield against bad conditions. And finally 4. The ability to navigate accurately and efficiently in low visibility in all terrain is the single most important skill a hill goer can possess; navigational error remains the single greatest contributory factor to Mountain Rescue callouts. A full copy of the IMRA 2008 statistics may be downloaded from here. Based on thiese statistics, IMRA have also produced a series of safety guidelines for hill users, which may be viewed or downloaded here. |
