The North West Mountain Rescue Team was established in Derry City in 1980 to provide a search and rescue service for the north west of Northern Ireland. From humble beginnings the team has now developed into an organisation which provides search and rescue services for the Sperrin Mountains, North Antrim and Co. Fermanagh and also acts in support of other teams based in the Mourne Mountains and Donegal. The objective of the team is simple: to provide the best possible outcome for those overtaken by misfortune in the hills or other remote areas. To this end the mountain rescue team must have the ability to maintain functionality in adverse conditions, stabilise any casualties far from medical aid and ensure a safe evacuation to hospital or elsewhere. The North West MRT is comprised of 40 active volunteers who have a wide range of individual skills and experiences from all parts of Northern Ireland which contribute to our ability to respond to any incident at any time, 365 days a year. In 2007 we responded to 20 incidents which have included searches for missing persons in remote rural or urban areas and rescues of injured walkers from mountains or other remote loactions. The NWMRT is entirely voluntary and depends mostly on public support to finance its operations. The operational area of the North West MRT is vast and varied compared to areas covered by many other teams throughout the British Isles. This has required the Team to be organised into three sections, one based in Derry City, one based in Enniskillen and the third in Belfast, each of which train every two weeks and together as a team at least once a month. The Team operates three 4x4 vehicles for remote access and also utilise an Incident Control Unit to to assist in the control of various operations. The Team continues to grow from strength to strength to improve in its ability to organise, develop and improve the service we provide to those who need it. This includes the development of new operational equipment such as communication and medical equipment to assist us in the continual challenge of ensuring up to date training for all team members.
